In our never-ending quest to discover weird and wonderful uses for recycled credit cards we discovered one of the best examples of card reuse yet, although it involves unwanted hotel key cards, rather than credit cards.

To mark the relauch of 1,200 Holiday Inn hotels worldwide, the global brand enlisted the help of Bryan Berg, the world record-holder for card-stacking. Using 200,000 plastic key cards, Berg built a fully-equipped 400sq ft, two-ton card hotel, replete with life-sized furniture, guest bedroom, bathroom and lobby. The result is sensational, and is a testament to Berg’s patience and dexterity.

Mr Berg, who first broke the world record for World’s Tallest House of Freestanding Playing Cards in 1992, with a tower 14ft 6in, said: “This is my largest card-stacking challenge to date and the only card creation I have ever made at full human scale.”

His creation is located in downtown Manhattan, New York and will be open until September 21, so be quick if you want to see it. While he’s there Berg will also be creating a freestanding 9ft replica of the Empire State Building in the key card hotel lobby using Holiday Inn playing cards. Needless to say, the PR team for Holiday Inn have been working very hard during their time out of action. Give the gang a pay rise!
