Naturally, a building that will house some of Australia’s most promising young student architects can’t be a simple, square, red brick blot on the landscape. So, you can understand the need for a competition, and the amount of interest generated.

Fittingly, there were 133 applicants from 15 countries to design the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, in a competition endorsed by the Australian Institute of Architects.

The striking new structure will include a library, lecture theatres, exhibition areas and workshops spaces, as well as dedicated areas for research into sustainable precinct design and performance.

The applications were judged not only by the University’s Professors Glyn Davis and Tom Kvan, but also distinguished architects Odile Decq of Paris and Melbourne’s own Peter Elliot.

The entrants were asked to look at four key issues when creating designs for the building. Those key issues were academic environment; built pedagogy; design studio; and the living building.

For those of you in the Melbourne area who just can’t get enough of cool architectural design, you can check out all the applicants’ proposed plans on display at the Wunderlich Gallery at the Parkville campus throughout September.

Does anyone have access to the designers who produced these concepts as we would like to buy the rights for a project we are working on in the UK. The image in particular is the 6th one down from the top – if so email me at phil@cube3marketing.com
