The Qantas Business credit card by American Express allows business owners to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points for their spending. There are some additional perks including travel insurance and accounting resources that make this card a worthy option for business, especially if you prefer flying with Qantas.
Benefit of the Card’s Best Features?
The main attraction of the American Express Qantas Business credit card is aimed at frequent Qantas travellers. With the very straight-forward rewards program, you get 1 point for every $1 spent on your card. For purchases made with Qantas, you get 2 points per $1. There is no limit to how many points you can accrue and points never expire so long as your account is up to date and in good standing.
If you travel often, then the $299 p.a. (tax deductible) annual card fee is worth the price because of the complimentary travel insurance that covers you when you travel on a ticket purchased with your card.
Aside from the rewards, this card is a flexible option for people with growing businesses. There is no preset spending limit, so you can make purchases as they are needed. Keep in mind that no spending limit does not mean unlimited spending! Your purchases will be approved based on your payment, spending and financial history.
All business credit cards by American Express are designed to make accounting much easier for you. For example, your monthly statements include GST itemisation. You can directly download transaction and tax information into records using major accounting programs like MYOB, Excel, or Quicken. And with up to 51 interest free days, you can avoid paying interest on purchases.
It is worth noting that the Qantas Business card has lower requirements than other Amex and business cards. This can make it a good option for building up credit history on your way to a Gold or Platinum card for your business.
Are There Any Drawbacks?
The $299 p.a. annual card fee is a bit steep, even taking the rewards program into consideration. Keep in mind that you will also have to become a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program if you want to link your card to it – there is a membership fee of $80.50 for this. Additional cards are also a bit pricey at $119 p.a. If you have a lot of employees who need to make purchases, then this card is probably not the best option if you want to keep costs low.
Amex could have been more generous with their benefits, such as more extensive travel cover and there isn’t any purchase protection offered at all. If you like to travel in style, then beware that there is a lot of fine print when it comes to redeeming your Qantas points. It is also a shame that they don’t offer free VIP lounge access.
Cards issued by American Express tend to be pricier than their MasterCard or Visa counterparts with higher interest rates and fees. Furthermore, many merchants apply surcharges just for using an Amex, which may negate any points benefits you get.
Who is it Suited for?
This card is really only suited to small or mid-sized business owners who frequently fly to destinations served by Qantas. If you don’t fly often, don’t plan on spending regularly with your card or don’t pay your account in full each month, then look elsewhere for a different offer.
Who is Eligible?
To be eligible for the American Express Qantas Business card, you must be at least 18 years old, a permanent resident or citizen, have a good credit score, and earn a minimum taxable income of at least $24,000.
