If you love hopping in a plane and flying to distant destinations, then the Qantas American Express Discovery credit card is made for you. Just by signing up, you can easily get 7,500 QFF points. Of course, you will pay for these flight rewards with higher interest rates, but it may be worth it if you want to discover the world with your Discovery card. Read on for our review.

Benefit of the Card’s Best Features?

The Qantas American Express Discovery credit card beats virtually all others when it comes to flyer point rewards. For every $1 you spend, you will get 1 QFF point. As an extra incentive to sign up, you can easily earn 7,500 QFF points upon approval. All you need to do is spend $300 in the first 3 months of becoming a card member and also purchase in Australia on selected Qantas products.

To give you an idea of what these points add up to, it takes 8,000 points plus about $11 in taxes and fees to fly from Melbourne to Sydney. If you want to go from Sydney to Los Angeles, it will take 48,000 points plus about $190 in taxes and fees (or additional points). There are no limits to how many points you can earn with this card.

Another nice perk to the Qantas American Express Discovery card is that there are no annual fees, a feature present in most Qantas credit cards. You can also get free cards for your family members or even friends.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

If you aren’t in the habit of paying back your bills in full and on time, then the interest can quickly add up as the purchase rate is 20.74% p.a. There is an interest free period for purchases, but it is only 44 days instead of 55 days as other top Australian credit cards offer. You will want to avoid cash advances unless it is really an emergency. You will pay 20.74% p.a. for cash plus fees and no interest free period. Keep in mind that all interest rates are variable, so you could end up paying higher.

The Qantas American Express Discovery credit card doesn’t have a balance transfer option. There also aren’t any promo introductory periods.

Aside from the QFF points, this card is lacking in extras. There isn’t any travel insurance or overseas coverage. Not that you’d want to choose a credit card based on this, but it seems odd not to have these features on a credit card which is all about travelling (although they would result in an annual fee).

Who Would be Suited?

If you are a frequent flyer and are responsible about paying off your bills in full to avoid high interest rates, then you can really benefit from the Qantas Discovery credit card from American Express.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, have a good credit history with no payment defaults, be a permanent Australian resident or have a current Business Long Stay Visa (Subclass 457), and a minimum taxable income of $35,000. If you are self-employed, then you must have been trading for a minimum of 18 months or 12 months if you already have an American Express credit card.
